Our Angel is in the Outfield: Guards Sweep 3

·

Baseball player in a white uniform with red trim raises arms as he runs, celebrating on the field with fans watching from the stands behind him.

The Anaheim Angels used to be the team nearest my house. I’d try to go to a game a season, and one year I brought a bunch of my friends to a game.

I had to go for the “Angels in the Outfield” joke. Mind you, I feel bad for the Angels. They haven’t had a winning season since 2015. So maybe they do need some angels …

On a sad note, Bob Tayek passed away today. Bob was the in-stadium announcer for most of my life, and when you’re at a game, you’ve heard him rolling that R a million times to say “José Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrramirez!”

Bob Tayek - 1951-2026

It is with great sadness we share the news that our longtime public address announcer, Bob Tayek, has passed away today. For nearly three decades, Bob was the voice of Progressive Field, welcoming generations of fans to Cleveland baseball with warmth, professionalism and a presence that became part of the ballpark experience.

Please keep Bob’s family, friends and all who worked alongside him in your thoughts during this difficult time.

@CleGuardians

Rest in peace, Bob, your voice will never be replaced.

Just before the first game, I told a friend of mine that if we didn’t figure out how to hit soon, we were fucked. All the great catching in the world won’t help.

  • Vogt is still out with a respiratory illness. My wife has trouble telling him and Asst. Manager Arnerich apart. We call them “Vogt Early and Vogt Often”.
  • With five runs in the third, someone got a new set of tires!
  • We still leave too many men on base at the end of an inning.

  • Four hits for three runs isn’t bad.
  • Ten left on base isn’t great, but it’s better than 12.
  • Lots of solid hitting and bad luck.

  • Parker Messik remains an incredible pitcher. He never seems to get rattled.
  • Kawn got the day off, and Martinez decided a lead-off home run was in order.
  • With his splitter working, Cade Smith’s pitching arsenal is incredibly terrifying.
  • Five men left on base today. This is an improvement!
  • Bad day for the Guards and ABS though.

Next up, Tito comes back to Cleveland as the Reds take on the Guards for a weekend series. In the area? There are still tickets available.
