Guards Fall to the Arch in St. Louis

·

Baseball batter in gray swings at a pitch with the catcher in red gear behind him and a sea of red-clad fans in the stands behind.

The last city I visited before the COVID lockdown was St. Louis. If you’re ever there, go to the City Museum. It’s amazing.

With Arias out for a while with his hamstring, we got Brito. Now with Valera off the IL, we sent Kayfus down to AAA to play more outfield. Hunter Gaddis is back, and Kolby Allard was DFA. Being DFA’d (Designated for Assignment) essentially means you’ve been fired. That said, if no other team picks up Allard’s contract, he may stay with the Guards.

Anyway, poor Brito had a terrible error that maybe cost us the second game, but honestly we ran ourselves out of the third game.

Our second series loss of the season, and our first two consecutive losses in a row. Not a great series, by the numbers, but a lot of really good plays by everyone. I do worry our bullpen isn’t going to hold up at this rate.

  • Angel Martínez hit his first home run of the year right handed.
  • Big Rig had a rough first inning, but settled down.
  • The Pen did well, and it was good to see Gaddis in his first game back.

  • A lot of people want to pin the loss on Brito, who booted a play at second. It’s a little more complicated, since if that home run in the 8th hadn’t happened, then Brito’s error would have been embarrassing but not a loss.
  • If you take the error away, we can look at José and Schneemann hitting solo blasts, Manzardo and his double, and Kwan’s insane double play.
  • The Pen is not as indomitable as it was a year ago, and there’s a weird loss of the strike zone.

  • Cecconi got into trouble a few times, but actually was doing pretty well. 34 pitches in the second inning is shit, but considering they only got one run off him, it reflects well on his ability.
  • Bo Naylor had a double in the 7th, and it looked like all his work is finally starting to pay off. He’s had some great hits, but they all seem to be right where an outfielder can get to.
  • José fouled a ball off his right shin and, even with the guard, looks like he did a number on himself.
  • Scheemann and Martínez had a goof up on a fly to left.
  • We had two (possibly three) boneheaded outs, running from third to home. I pointed this out in an earlier post, but I’m really starting to wonder what the hell is going on with that. They’re being too aggressive.
