Hot and Humid in Central Ohio for the Cup

·

Baseball batter in a gray uniform swings at a pitch at home plate as the catcher in red gear guards nearby.

Armstrong left the game on the 24th with a weird leg injury. He said it felt like he’d been hit in the leg, which is one if the indicators of an Achilles tear. Thankfully his isn’t torn, but he’s undergoing evaluation. Most likely, he’s out for the season.

Meanwhile, this is the series to decide the Ohio Cup, which no one actually cares about. Hammy spent game three joking about it, and how big it is, but the reality is that we just don’t care. It’s amusing.

Yet again we start with a rain out and a double header on Tuesday. The hilarity being that after they called the game? It stopped raining.

Splitting the double header was … fine. But we needed José to manufacture runs.

There was a rather brutal argument made in an article recently about how this disaster of shitty hitting is due to the Guards prioritizing fielding. And honestly they’re not wrong. As much as I love Manzardo, he’s an ‘okay’ player at best. And because of that, we’re relegating the role of first base and DH to mid level players.

We had a thumper, Josh Naylor, but between his chaotic behaviour and his inconsistencies, he wasn’t worth trying to hold in Free Agency. That also brings up how the hell did we get to this point, where we have a billion middle infielders (2nd and short) and no solid outfielders, so we’re trying to convert everyone to an outfielder?

One thing that directly relates to the Reds, though, is that Cleveland’s old hitting coach went to Cincinnati with Tito. They’re having as many issues hitting as we are. Our current hitting coach was the old guy’s assistant. Look… We need to shake that up, and hard. If we can’t get guys who hit dingers, we need to get guys who just get solid hits. Get on base, run, steal, bunt, and play small ball. If we keep waiting on a Hank Arron, we’ll be at the bottom forever.

  • José had a nice single in the first, which was capitalized on by Manzo.
  • Manzo 100% was hit by that damn pitch, which makes two games recently where New York fucked us over. Manzo took that recalled HBP personally and hit a salami (grand slam). That was Manzo’s first salami!
  • Of course… it would be nice to get more runs after that. Instead we get a single from José and he steals second and third, and a sac fly ties the game back up.
  • Speedy Petey Haplin threw out Elly De La Cruz who tried to stretch out a single.
  • Beautiful small ball from Rocchio for a sac bunt RBI and that’s where it ended.

  • The only reason we used our regular starter here is we have Thursday off.
  • Another shut out?! Come on, guys!
  • Big Rig struck out 12, tying his best record. Of course we lost.

  • Brady Singer had Cleveland under his thumb until the 5th when he walked in two runs.
  • Four runs on one hit?!
  • Manzo got two home runs in two days (and three games).
  • Kwan again shows why he’s king of Left Field. Also he’s back to being a slap hitting shit goblin, and I love to see it.
  • José could have had a little league home run, had he not pulled up at first assuming someone would catch the ball and throw it to second. It was a reasonable assumption.
  • Still way too many men left on base.

Tomorrow’s an off day, then it’s a homestand against the D-Backs and the Mets.

Trades have begun, with the deadline of next Monday. Who wants to bet we trade Arias?
